10 Frame Analysis – Say Something, Karen Harding (Zac Samuel remix)

The first frame starts with a head shot of Karen Harding singing against a red neon lit background, giving the dance vibe and intertextually referencing a night club or party. She is dressed in a sparkly party dress conforming to the genre of dance. The shot itself moves around here face in circular motions keeping her centred so that she is centred for the audience. Her red lipstick matches the red lighting behind swell as completing the "night out" look with distinctive heavy makeup and jewellery.

The shot then changes to an indoor parking area dimly lit with neon blue lighting, contrasting the previous red neon but also giving the intertextual reference of a night club or party feel conforming to the genre of dance. There is the front of a car centred to the right of the frame which references the journey to a party or nightclub as it initiates the start of the song, suggesting that the songs dance vibe only increases.

The shot jumps to the car now moving towards to audience still in the blue neon lighting maintaining the club lighting theme and continuing her car journey towards a party. The headlights are now visible and by jumping quickly from the last frame to this frame, makes the headlights appear like strobe lights, in-keeping with the dance genre.

The frame then changes to another headshot of Karen Harding, as it jumps back, she continues to dance carrying on from where she left off in the previous headshot. These continuous dance movements accentuates the dance genre and the dance plot of the music video. She is represented as being a young, attractive woman and this is reflected in her slightly provocative dancing throughout.

The shot then jumps back to the car, this time the audience is able to see her visible in the driver’s seat, she is illuminated by red neon light which seems to follow her throughout the video, from her headshots to the car. The ill lit car park is now only illuminated by red and blue neon lights accentuating the night life aspect as she continues her journey into the carpark.

The frame then shifts back to a headshot of Karen Harding as she continues to dance and lip sync the words. She continues to play with her hair which is a representative feature of her mixed race and perhaps she is defending mixed racial beauty within the music video.

The next shot jumps back to the car within the parking lot, this time it is the rear of the car with its red lights on, in-keeping with the red and blue lights throughout the video. The car is now stationary perhaps representing the end of the journey as she has reached her final destination, all while the music continues to build up.

The shot of the car continues, however it jumps to the side if the car where we can see Karen Harding in the drivers seat. Her silhouette is outlined in red neon light which follows her throughout, where as the car and carpark are both dimly lit with blue neon lighting. These quick shots of the car moving whilst the video continues, reflect the fast pace of the song as well as the journey she takes to the carpark.

The frame then jumps back to a profile shot of Karen Harding as she continues lip syncing to the music whilst dancing. Her simple, slow motion motions mimic similar music videos from various dance videos when they film people dancing in a club scenario in slow motion.

The frame jumps back once again to the car, this time it is from the back of the car looking through. The audience is able to see the back of Karen Harding illuminated by red neon light as before, unlike the previous car shot, the car is positioned centred of the screen with symmetrical neon lights either side of the car producing blue neon lighting, once more accentuating the dance genre and intertextuality of night life and a party or club scene.
